Your Switch 2 Might Have a Broken Battery Indicator

If you’ve noticed that your Switch 2 is dying before the battery percentage drops to zero, you’re not alone. Nintendo has confirmed the battery charge indicator is not working correctly on some Switch 2 consoles. The battery percentage shown on the screen doesn’t match the actual amount of power left, causing the console to shut down unexpectedly.

Nintendo has admitted there is a problem on its official support website and has shared steps to try to fix it. You just need your Nintendo Switch 2, adapter, and access to the internet. Before you start on this, make sure that your console is up to date and that your AC Adapter is the correct one to use on your switch 2.

The correct AC Adapter model is NGN-01, which should be used anytime you are docking the console. The HAC-002 can only charge the console directly. If that’s not your issue, then it’s time to put your console into recovery mode.

When you’re ready and sure that your console has a nearly full battery, put the Switch 2 into recovery mode. To get into recovery mode, hold the volume up and down buttons at the same time and then press the power button briefly. Make sure to keep holding the volume buttons until a recovery menu appears. Nintendo says this should reset the battery meter and fix the incorrect readings.

Trade a small amount of battery life now for improved battery health in the future.

Don’t be afraid to try more than once, as the console may forget to reset the battery meter the first time. Unfortunately, if that doesn’t work, then it means there’s an underlying issue. If these steps don’t work after trying them multiple times, Nintendo suggests sending the console in for repairs. This means dealing with the hassle of shipping the device, waiting while it gets fixed, and not being able to play games during that time.

While Nintendo offers an online repair process, the fact that so many consoles might need repairs suggests there is a bigger issue that needs to be looked into and permanently fixed. When working properly, the Switch 2’s battery is supposed to last between 2.5 and 6.5 hours on a full charge, and it takes about three hours to charge when the console is off or in sleep mode. But these numbers don’t matter if the battery indicator is constantly wrong.

Nintendo has not said what is causing the problem, but that is a very strange issue for the console to have. It could be a programming issue, or maybe something is wrong with how the battery sits in the console itself. Basically, it’s likely either a software error or a mismatch between the hardware and software.

Unfortunately, unless Nintendo says what’s wrong, we’ll likely not know. For now, it’s just a good idea to fix your console and start the repair process if needed. The faster you do this, the sooner you can get it back, especially if others have this same issue and need to send their consoles in, too.
