The future of delivery is about to become a reality for more households than ever before, as Wing and Walmart team up for what will be the world’s largest drone delivery expansion ever.
By this time next year, drone delivery will be available at Walmart Supercenters across several major U.S. metros, including some of the country’s largest retail markets: Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando and Tampa.
In total, we plan to expand Wing drone delivery to an additional 100 Walmart stores across selected markets. We’ll also be expanding to additional stores in Dallas-Fort Worth, where Wing and Walmart already serve customers from 18 Supercenters.
“The popularity of drone delivery in DFW is a testament not just to its convenience, but to the way this technology quickly becomes a part of everyday life,” Wing CEO Adam Woodworth said. “Walmart has been a strong partner that shares our commitment to innovation and is equally eager to bring this new type of service to many more households.”
Today’s news is more than a decade in the making. For the first time ever, drone delivery will be available to millions of households across several major U.S. cities, giving many families access to delivery in minutes.
Walmart already has the largest drone delivery footprint of any U.S. retailer, and it’s going to get a whole lot bigger in the months ahead.
“As we look ahead, drone delivery will remain a key part of our commitment to redefining retail. We’re pushing the boundaries of convenience to better serve our customers, making shopping faster and easier than ever before,” said Greg Cathey, SVP, Walmart U.S. Transformation and Innovation. “This expansion of our drone delivery service marks a significant milestone in that journey. As the first retailer to scale drone delivery, Walmart is once again demonstrating its commitment to leveraging technology to enhance our delivery offerings with a focus on speed.”
This expansion comes 18 months after Wing and Walmart launched their first location together in fall 2023. Since then, they’ve expanded around the Dallas-Fort Worth area, covering a population area of nearly 2 million people.
Wing and Walmart are completing thousands of weekly deliveries, with an average fulfillment time under 19 minutes.
“This is real drone delivery at scale,” Woodworth said. “People all around the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex have made drone delivery part of their normal shopping habits over the past year. Now we’re excited to share this ultra-fast delivery experience with millions more people across many more U.S. cities.”
How Will it Work
Wing and Walmart will launch drone delivery at stores in several new regions over the coming months. Customers in Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando and Tampa can sign up on Wing’s website to be notified when drone delivery becomes available in their area by visiting wing.com/walmart.
You’ll be able to shop thousands of items from Walmart stores, including fresh produce, household essentials, and quick afternoon snacks.
During checkout, you’ll confirm the precise delivery location on your property, for example in your front or back yard. Then your items will be packed into a specialized box before a Wing delivery drone takes off at your local Walmart store, retrieves the order and then cruises up to 65 mph to your home. The drone then gently lowers the package to the ground just minutes after takeoff.
Countless DFW customers have shared stories about how drone delivery has made their lives easier. Busy parents have ordered last-minute snacks for the kids, at-home cooks have gotten that one missing ingredient, and aspiring DIY-ers have received the supplies they needed to finish the job.
