The Mac’s Biggest Game Is MIA, What’s Going On?

Summary

  • Cyberpunk 2077 for macOS is delayed past “early next year,” leaving fans eager but without updates.
  • The Switch 2 release coincides with Cyberpunk’s Switch 2 availability, possibly delaying the macOS version.
  • CD Projekt RED’s silent approach disappoints fans.

Mac gaming is on the rise. With great, capable hardware and increasing developer support with help from Apple, those who choose to go with Cupertino instead of Redmond now have more opportunities to play in between work sessions.

However, one of the biggest titles that has been promised for macOS still isn’t out, and there’s been a worrying degree of silence by the developers and Apple.

Cyberpunk 2077 Was Promised in Early 2025

At the end of October 2025, CD Project RED made an announcement that Cyberpunk 2077 would be coming to macOS. There was no specific launch date, but it would be “early next year”. Now, as I write this, it’s the end of May 2025.

I don’t know what most people think of as “early” in the year, but to me that means January, February, or maybe March. June is definitely past anyone’s definition of “early”, so I think it’s not unreasonable to wonder where the macOS version of the game is.

The Game Is Ready for Switch 2 in June

The lack of news is even more surprising given that CD Projekt announced that a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Cyberpunk was ready to go at the console’s launch. It will release on the same day as the Switch 2 console, and plenty of people have already seen or played preview code leading up to this launch.

Maybe work on the macOS version has been deprioritized to get the Switch 2 version in shape. After all, there was never a fixed release date for the macOS version, but the launch date of the console is set in stone and it seems that they’ll be working on the game right up to and beyond the official Switch 2 launch.

This “binned” M4 Pro MacBook Pro with 14-inch screen is one of the best deals ever to come from Apple’s factories. It’s not the cheapest laptop in the M4 MacBook Pro family, but it’s by far the best value for money. This is the last laptop most people will have to buy for many years.

The Official Forums Are Silent, There Are No Announcements

That announcement post has an official forum page, and at this point it has almost 100 comments, first excited about the release, and then gradually descending into disappointment as people realize the game isn’t coming within the promised timeframe.

Of course, all of this could just be remedied by a simple update, announcement, or any communication from the developer. One of the big reasons people are bummed about gaming on a Mac has nothing to do with the technical capabilities of Macs, and has everything to do with not being taken seriously by the gaming industry.

The thing is, there are millions of Apple Silicon machines out there, and I include iPads with M chips in that calculus. It’s not a huge number in the greater scheme of things, but consider that CDPR thought it was worth releasing Cyberpunk on the Xbox One and Series consoles, which don’t have a large installation base compared to PlayStation and PC either. Surely that warrants at least a single update post months after the announcement at least?

Mac Hardware Is Already Capable of Cyberpunk

I appreciate that porting a game to another operating system isn’t easy, and with a game of this size and complexity, it’s an even bigger challenge. That said, people have already demonstrated Cyberpunk running pretty well using the Apple Game Porting Toolkit.

You can see Cyberpunk and several other games running using the toolkit in a video by Digital Foundry. While it’s not perfect, it’s playable. that’s with all the overhead and caveats of emulation and translation layers.

The whole point of the porting toolkit was to make the process of bringing games to Mac faster and easier for developers, and I have to wonder why CDPR would make such a bold announcement with a short timeframe if they weren’t basically already there. I also wonder how closely related the Switch 2 and macOS porting projects are, since, of course, both the Switch and Apple Silicon broadly use the same Arm architecture. Although for all I know, there’s barely any overlap.

macOS Is Finally Becoming a Legit Gaming Platform

Game on Mac fans!

Mac Gaming Needs This Game for Many Reasons

I think it’s hard to overstate how important Cyberpunk 2077 is as a release for macOS. Sure, it would be cool for Mac owners who somehow haven’t played this touchstone game on another platform to give it a go, but the status of Cyberpunk as the modern Crysis is an even bigger deal.

The game has become the torch-bearer for the latest graphics technologies, and it’s definitely going to legitimize Mac as a gaming platform in the eyes of many people who aren’t keeping a finger on the pulse of Mac gaming. It would be a big PR win, is what I’m saying.

Apart from that, I’ve started appreciating gaming on my MacBook so much these past few years that it’s become my preferred way to play certain games. Baldur’s Gate 3, for example, plays like a dream on my M4 Pro MacBook Pro. Mainly because the laptop is compact, with much superior battery life and much less noise compared to my Windows gaming laptop.

I have several hundred hours invested in Cyberpunk 2077, and I’m ready to put in several hundred more on my Mac. Heck, I’ll probably buy the Switch 2 version too. CDPR, I don’t need the macOS version to come out before it’s ready. All I need to know is that it’s still coming and how far or close that release date actually is.
