As we stagger toward another major gaming event, it’s time again for Hollow Knight: Silksong to enter the headlines. This time, an update to the game’s files has fans hoping for a shadow drop at the upcoming Summer Game Fest.
The initial spark that lit this latest fire was the game’s all of the game’s packages being updated on Steam, as viewable via SteamDB. Achievements in various languages have been added, for example, but the biggest evidence people have pointed toward is the addition of CD/store keys, which they are suggesting means a release version of Silksong has been uploaded.
Hollow Knight: Silksong was initially announced years ago as an expansion for the original game before being pivoted to a full sequel. SInce then, though, development has been slow and Team Cherry have been largely silent, only popping up occasionally to confirm that it’s still being worked on. The ravenous fanbase have taken all of this both terribly and in great humour, seemingly in about equal amounts. The subreddits are hilarious mixtures of people trying to cope with the constant bouts of excitement followed by disappointment, crazy lingo and about a million different insider jokes.
Still, this new evidence seems promising. And we do know the game is supposed to still be coming out this year, as it was briefly featured in marketing for the Switch 2, appearing with a 2025 release date in a trailer. That was followed by a Switch 2 physical edition version of Silksong also popping up with a 2025 release window.
We also know that Silksong is supposed to launch on day 1 for Game Pass as well.
A shadow drop is also possible, with a lot of fans speculating it could have during this year’s Summer Game Fest, perhaps at the Xbox event. However, it is worth remembering that as part of the original Silksong Kickstarter, the developers did promise they would contact backers prior to release so they could send them appropriate keys to the game. To shadow drop Silksong, they would have to go back on that promise.
