Motorola’s Moto Tag Is Now The Most Accurate Android Tracker

Summary

  • Motorola’s Moto Tag is now the most accurate Android tracker with UWB support on Google’s Find Hub network.
  • UWB technology enables directional guidance and precise distance measurement, similar to Apple’s AirTags.
  • Users need to update their Moto Tag app and firmware for UWB functionality, with compatible smartphones required for use.

For a long time, the tracker fight has been very one-sided, with Apple’s Find My network reliably using other Apple devices as a mesh network. That only really caught on with Android recently, and now, the Moto Tag has just become probably the most accurate Android tracker out there.

After a year-long wait, Motorola is finally delivering on its promise of ultra-wideband (UWB) support for its Moto Tag location trackers. The Moto Tag is now officially the first tracker on Google’s Find Hub network to offer UWB for finding lost items, thanks to a new firmware update rolling out to users. The underlying hardware needed to support this was already there—Motorola just needed to flip the switch to enable it.

Why is this a big deal? Like other Find Hub trackers, the Moto Tag was previously reliant on Bluetooth for proximity detection. The activation of UWB technology now allows for directional guidance and precise distance measurement. This means that instead of just knowing your lost keys are “somewhere nearby,” you’ll be guided by on-screen arrows and a distance countdown, leading you directly to their location. This has been a commonplace feature on Apple’s AirTags, and it’s good to see that there’s at least one Android-compatible tracker that supports this.

To be fair, this wasn’t all on Motorola (for once). The functionality was contingent on Google updating its location tracking network, recently rebranded from “Find My Device” to “Find Hub,” to support UWB. This network-side update has only recently gone live, allowing Motorola and other tracker makers to make use of it and actually roll out UWB support to their trackers. Motorola is just the first to do so, but hopefully, we’ll see many others.

Works with Find My and Find My Device.

To enable this enhanced functionality, Moto Tag owners will need to update their Moto Tag application to version 01.00.073.10-release, available through the Google Play Store. Following the app update, a firmware update to version 2.0.93 will become available for the tag itself, which should give you UWB capabilities. Evidently, you will need a compatible smartphone so you can actually use UWB. This includes more recent flagship models from Google’s Pixel line and Samsung’s Galaxy series.

The Find Hub network still needs many improvements before it can actually work as reliably as Find My does. But once most issues are ironed out, it’s actually shaping up to become pretty decent—it has billions of possible access points (Android devices) to tap into for location purposes. If you want to get started with Find Hub, the Moto Tag is one of the best options, if not the best one.
