Dr. Andrew Tridgell Unveils Breakthrough in Dual-Motor Multicopter Design – sUAS News

In a major leap for the drone industry, renowned software and robotics pioneer Dr. Andrew Tridgell has developed a groundbreaking method for stabilizing dual-motor-per-arm multicopters—ushering in a new era of design flexibility and freedom.

Created in collaboration with CubePilot and the broader multicopter community, Tridgell’s solution rewrites the rulebook by enabling same-direction rotating motors on a single arm to operate independently. This marks a significant departure from the 19th-century convention of counter-rotating coaxial designs.

Critically, this method requires no reliance on counter-rotation for stability, making it a public domain innovation that renders historic patent claims on coaxial designs effectively obsolete.

Leading drone delivery company Manna is currently testing the system, with early signs suggesting a seamless retrofit path for its existing fleet.

“This is a textbook example of innovation over litigation,” said a CubePilot spokesperson. “Tridge’s work empowers developers, sidesteps outdated patents, and opens the door to new performance possibilities.”

With its practical design, open access, and industry-wide implications, this advancement cements Tridgell’s role in shaping the next chapter of multicopter evolution.
