Battlefront 2 Just Broke Its Own Steam Record, 8 Years After Coming Out – WGB

Yesterday I wrote about the surprise resurgence of Star Wars: Battlefront 2, the EA published multiplayer shooter from 2017. At the time, the game was close to breaking its all-time peak concurrent player record. Well, it broke it. No, it smashed it.

In the last few hours Star Wars: Battlefront 2 hit a brand new concurrent player count on Steam, bringing in 17,888 people to fight the Empire or put down the rebel scum. Previously, the record, set a year after the games release, was just under 10.5k.

According to BattlefrontUpdates on X, who claims to have insider sources, the game managed to hit 329,000 players across all platforms just an hour or two ago.

The huge groundswell of support for the game has brought Star Wars: Battlefront creative director Dennis Brannvall back to social media. His last post was in 2023, but it looks like he’s finally remembered his X password.

“I felt a great disturbance in the force,” he wrote in his first tweet back, followed by “how have you been?”

The return of Battlefront has led to fans calling for a sequel. EA no longer has the license to the series, though, but that doesn’t mean something couldn’t happen, or that Lucas Films could even get a new team to handle a Battlefront game. Sadly, it seems unlikely that we will get a new game in the series, but then again, who knows? If Lucas Films senses money to be earned, it might just happen.
