Apple Will Let You Fix Your Own iPad

Summary

  • iPad has finally been added to Apple’s self-repair program, offering manuals, parts, tools, and diagnostics.
  • The program supports a total of 65 Apple products now, including recently released models.
  • Genuine parts for iPads are also now available through Apple’s Genuine Parts Distributor program for smaller repair shops.

Apple’s self-service repair program is seen by some as being a bit on the half-baked side, but to Apple’s credit, it has been slowly improving it with new devices and parts. Now, the iPad is finally joining the list of devices that you can repair at home.

Apple’s iPad range finally has a presence in Apple’s self-service repair program. Starting tomorrow, owners of recent iPad Air (M2 and later), iPad Pro (M4), iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad (A16) devices will have access to repair manuals, genuine Apple parts, Apple Diagnostics troubleshooting sessions, tools, and rental toolkits. In other words, users will be able to get genuine parts and repair their own devices at home, provided they have the knowledge to do so and a very steady hand.

The iPad was still one of the major holdouts of Apple’s self-repair program, as the company had previously added support for iPhones and a variety of Mac computers. It further went on to add support for used parts in addition to the parts that you can buy yourself, so despite the fact that new parts can be expensive, this self-repair program is at least more accessible now, as long as you’re not using counterfeit parts. With this latest addition, the Self-Service Repair Store will support a total of 65 Apple products. This includes the recently released iPhone 16e, MacBook Air, and Mac Studio.

Brian Naumann, Apple’s vice president of AppleCare, commented that “our goal is to create products that last as long as possible. Today’s announcement enables more customers to further extend the life of their products — all without compromising safety, security, or privacy.”

In addition to the iPad repair expansion, Apple provided further details on its Genuine Parts Distributor program. This recently launched initiative aims to broaden access to genuine Apple service parts for independent, smaller repair shops—in case you don’t want to repair your phone yourself but it’s also too expensive to send it to Apple, smaller repair shops should also get access to genuine parts to perform repairs.

Genuine Apple parts for iPads are also expected to be available through these distributors starting tomorrow. Repair shops enrolled in this program are still few and far between—currently, these include MobileSentrix in the United States, and both MobileSentrix and Mobileparts.shop in Europe. But the list should continue to grow over time. Unauthorized parts and repairs are one of the biggest problems of repair shops nationwide, especially smaller ones, so it’s a headache many business owners will want to get rid of if they get a chance.

If you have an iPad that needs some repairing, make sure to go to Apple’s self-repair portal to get some parts.
