3 Fantastic Hulu Shows You Can Watch in One Weekend

Epic series that span many seasons have their place, but sometimes you just want to start and finish an entire show over a single weekend. That’s why I’ve rounded up three of my favorite TV shows on Hulu that won’t take long to binge.

Murder at the End of the World

In A Murder at the End of the World, Emma Corrin plays a hacker called Darby who has written a true crime novel based on her sleuthing experiences. She’s invited to a retreat at a compound in Iceland by Andy, a reclusive tech billionaire played by Clive Owen. When one of the guests dies, Darby takes it upon herself to uncover what happened.

I’m a sucker for a murder mystery and this show scratches that itch, though it’s different from many others in part thanks to the young and spiky protagonist. Darby is smart and resourceful, but equally she makes mistakes and feels overwhelmed. There is also a nice dynamic between Darby and her friend Bill (Harris Dickinson), and we get to see their relationship begin and blossom in flashbacks through unusual circumstances as they investigate serial killers.

The dark, cold setting of Iceland provides a great backdrop, with Andy’s compound far removed from the rest of civilization. It’s realized well on screen and you get a genuine sense of the isolation and cold that Darby and the others are feeling. It also adds to the mystery and provides a fun locked-room element; there are only so many suspects, which means you can have a crack at trying to figure things out.

Dopesick

Dopesick appealed to me for two reasons. First, it’s based on a true story about the opioid crisis in America—how a pharmaceutical company pushed a powerful painkiller under the pretence of it being non-addictive, which led to the destruction of many lives.

Second, it’s packed full of fantastic actors like Michael Keaton, Peter Sarsgaard, Kaitlyn Dever, and Rosario Dawson, all of whom are on top form here. Through them and others we see how the drug was pushed, how it impacted families, and the criminal investigation surrounding it all.

Dopesick starts off slow as it introduces the characters, but stick with it because it becomes riveting, albeit not an easy watch when you know where it’s heading. It’s worth learning about, but you’ll likely want to stream a half-hour comedy afterward for some light relief.

Paradise

It’s tricky to talk about Paradise without spoiling too much, but I can say that the show has a shocking opening as a Secret Service agent called Xavier (Sterling K. Brown) discovers the President of the United States (James Marsden) lying dead in his room. Xavier is considered a suspect and is signed off work, but he’s not one to rest; he immediately jumps into action to find out who is responsible for the murder.

You see plenty of Marsden’s Cal through flashbacks, as you learn what led him to his death and his changing relationship with his family and Xavier. The two actors are superb and magnetic. Marsden brings endless charisma, while Brown leads with fierce determination. Julianne Nicholson, as a wealthy woman with lots of power, is also good.

Paradise is full of twists and turns, with basically every episode throwing something crazy at you—it’s a little ridiculous, but go with it. While the entire show is brilliant, the penultimate episode in particular is spectacular, showing a real-time portrayal of a country in crisis. It’s one that will stay with you and make you think about what you’d do in that position.
